Is Reddit a Good Source of Factual Information?

If you are someone that spends a lot of time on the internet, then it is likely that you have used or regularly use Reddit. For those of you that are not familiar with Reddit, Reddit is a social media platform that is split up into millions of things known as ‘sub reddits’.

This is arguably one of the most diverse social media platforms that you can find on the internet and it covers a variety of topics and caters to a large portion of interests.

Reddit stands out from other social media platforms because there is a lack of censorship on the website. If there is NSFW content, you will get a warning, but content is not removed unless it is considered to be racially insensitive or not suitable for public consumption.

Right now, there is a lot going on in the world and no matter where you look online, you are bombarded with news stories and statements. The issue with being so exposed to all of this news is that you are not sure which to believe. For this reason, a lot of people are turning to Reddit as their main source of news and information, but is Reddit really a good source of factual information?

Posts By The General Public

Something that you should keep in mind when you are finding information on Reddit is that all of the content and posts are just created by the general public. There is no official news board connected to Reddit and all of the information that is posted on the site is just from everyday guys. This means that news could be very easily posted by a random person with no idea what they are talking about, but they make whatever they post sound clever and believable. Be sure that when you see a post you on the site to double-check it before you potentially spread misinformation.

Anonymous Options Makes People More Secure

One of the biggest reasons why Reddit is so popular is because it is private. On other social media platforms, you are usually expected to share personal information about yourself and include your full name and a picture, just so people are able to find you. On Reddit you do not have the same expectations and you can be completely anonymous. Because it is so easy to be anonymous, people that have access to vital news are more open to sharing it because they do not have to suffer the consequences of being found out if they post some private information.

You Can Make Factual Information Appear Higher

If you are someone that spends a lot of time on Reddit, something that you will be more than familiar with is the Upvote system that Reddit has in place. When someone posts content on the platform, you have the option to upvote or downvote the content. This means that if someone is found posting content that is not true or unreliable, people will downvote it so that it does not appear so easily on the homepage. When you head on the site, people tend to filter by top of the month or year and false content will not appear.

There is No Media Censorship to Deal With

When a big event happens in the world, something that you will notice is that social media tends to be flooded with videos and posts about the event and then these posts will miraculously disappear. This is because a lot of social media platforms have very high censorship which means any inappropriate content will be very quickly removed and you will not be able to see the reality of the situation. On Reddit, unless content is incredibly inappropriate, they will not take it down and this means that you will get a realistic idea of what is happening in the world without all of the censorship.

You Get Information as it Happens

When a major world event happens and people want to know what is going on, they will usually turn straight to social media to ask questions. As I said before, when a major event happens, people will usually post content straight to social media and ask for clarity. If you are someone that regularly checks your Reddit page, then you will be able to get news as it is happening and you will be able to get any information shared by people that know what is going on instantly. This means no waiting around for constructed news stories.
